The Meaning of Auburn Tigers Football

All I know Auburn – the Town, the University, and tradition – to truly understand Auburn The football and what it really means. Let me explain. . .

My earliest memories of Auburn are from about 1955. I remember walking street of the university in the house of my aunt sandwich with a lemonade and grilled cheese for lunch Toomer Drug store counter, then go to the theater Tigre (in hand) and see "Gone With the Wind." I have very fond memories of summers in Auburn. So I understand what it means to be not only a fan of Auburn, Alabama, but Auburn Tigers!

Auburn football stories is one of the more plants, not only in the South "Deep", but throughout college football. We'll start with the oldest rivalry in football and the Deep South athletics in college. Auburn and Georgia first played on February 20, 1892, in Piedmont Park in Atlanta! Since 1898, the Auburn Tigers have played Georgia Bulldogs every year! This contest is 111 total (Auburn did not submit a soccer team of the year, the war of 1943), with Auburn leading the series 53-50-8. Another new to the game was the Auburn Tigers travel first bowl. The Bacardi Cup is the bowl game ever played outside the United States. New Year's Day In 1937, Auburn and Villanova fought to a 7-7 tie in Havana, Cuba!

Another unique element of Auburn Football "has been many years when the games were played. The main rivals, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and Alabama will not come to play in "The prettiest village in the plains." Auburn games home with these schools have played in Atlanta, Montgomery, Mobile, Columbus, Macon, Savannah, or Birmingham! Finally, in 1960, things began to change. In 1960, Georgia came to Auburn and lost 9-6. In 1970, Georgia Tech came South to Auburn and lost 31-7. In 1974, Tennessee came to Auburn and lost 21-0. And the Alabama Crimson Tide came at Auburn during the first in 1974, losing 30-20. These victories proved that Auburn could finally enjoy a "home" game!

No matter if you call the Tigers, the prairie or the War Eagles, they all have the same meaning. . . Auburn! The "Tiger" is both the nickname and mascot! "Burrowing" was Auburn City refers to the "most beautiful village of the plain are the two references from the poem by Oliver Goldsmith (the" Deserted Village, "published in 1770) "War Eagle" is at once the cry of battle and good morning.

War Eagle, of course, is based on a legend that ties a wounded eagle to a wounded comrade. The bird was rescued by a soldier. He makes the eagle, while a student at Auburn and eventually became a faculty member. Both were in that day that Auburn and Georgia played in Piedmont Park. When Auburn scored the first touchdown the old eagle separately and hovers over the earth! Auburn people looked at the familiar figure and said: "War Eagle." At the end of the game, the eagle collapsed and died of old had given everything for the Auburn victory. The eagle may be dead but his spirit lives in the heart of Auburn fans everywhere.

Tradition and pride continue to "fuel" Auburn football. John Heisman, the legendary coach the highest honor the college football bears his name, was Auburn's coach from 1895-1899 and posted a record of 04/02/1912. Auburn is unique Heisman school where trained to have a Heisman Trophy winner. Auburn has two: quarterback Pat Sullivan won the award in 1971 and holder of the Balloon Bo Jackson won the honor in 1985.

The long tradition of Auburn Football includes national championships, undefeated seasons, and many many household names in college football to remember, but this is only the beginning! Whether you win or lose, Auburn tradition and pride is still being felt in Auburn and the famous cry: "Eagles Waaarrrrr! "
