How do you see what I can write in Japanese / Chinese characters on my vista laptop in English?

Yes .. so I'm trying to understand how to write Chinese characters Japanese on my laptop, probably will have to download language pack, but I can only look to find language packs for Windows XP and links / tips would be helpful Thanks
